Soil block recipe
Thanks for your patience with this soil block recipe. I had great plans for making an infographic for this, but I’m wearing too many hats for that to become a reality, at least for this year.
If you are in Manitoba, starting a dye garden from seeds would start around mid-April. Sowing seeds earlier than that could cause your plants to be in stress before transplanting.
Mix:
10 cups potting mix
7.5 cups compost (I use seasoil brand)
1T green sand (potassium and trace mineral source. In Manitoba, I buy from Sage Garden)
1T bone meal fine (phosphorus and calcium source)
1T azomite (trace minerals; if you can’t get this, you can skip)
The mixture should be wet but not soaking, so start with 6 cups of water and add as needed.
Note:
I always have to sift/screen the compost if I am making minis to eliminate the big chunks. For the 1.5” and 2” sizes, I don’t have to sift sometimes, but if you find that big chunks are in the way, please sift.
For the potting mix, sifting depends on the brand I use – if the bag has bigger chips, I have to sift even if I am making minis. For the bigger soil blocks, no need to sift the potting soil.
If you do not have the soil block molds, you can still use this recipe to fill whatever seed starting tray, pots or cell tray you have available.
